Zeer Pot help the rural poor in a cost-effective ( desert refrigerator )

Image
Northern Nigeria is an impoverished region where people in rural communities eke out a living from subsistence farming. With no electricity, and therefore no refrigeration, perishable foods spoil within days. Such spoilage causes disease and loss of income for needy farmers, who are forced to sell their produce daily. SOLUTION ??? I would like to introduce you the Zeer Pot (pot-in-pots) “ The pot-in-pot to help the rural poor in a cost-effective, participatory and sustainable way. ” The pot-in-pot consists of two earthenware pots of different diameters, one placed inside the other. The space between the two pots is filled with wet sand that is kept constantly moist, thereby keeping both pots damp. Fruit, vegetables and other items such as soft drinks are put in the smaller inner pot, which is covered with a damp cloth. The phenomenon that occurs is based on a simple principle of physics: the water contained in the sand between the two pots evaporates towards the out...

Emerald Tree Boa

Image
Corallus caninus, commonly called the emerald tree boa, is a non-venomous boa species found in the rainforests of South America. Since 2009 the corallus batesii species is fully recognized and split from the synonymy corallus caninus. If your familiar with Green Tree Pythons you will notice that Emerald Tree Boas look very much like Green Tree Pythons. Emerald Tree Boas grow to about five foot as adults and are a more aggressive species of snakes. The snake usually hangs up in the tree with its head hanging down so it can grab its prey if it approaches from below and then it constricts its prey and kills it before it swallows its prey. The Emerald Tree Boa spends its days up in the branches of a tree and hunts at night. The Emerald Tree Boa will feed on almost any small mammal and also birds. It was once thought that the snake fed only on birds but it is now known that this is not true. It catches its prey extremely fast and its metabolism is much slower than snake...

How Much Does a Cloud Weigh?

Image
Clouds are actually pretty heavy! 1.1 million pounds = 498,952 kilograms (or 500 tonnes) Clouds are look so nice and fluffy and lighter-than-air, so they certainly can’t weigh much. Right? First, figure out how dense the cloud is. Scientists have measured the water density of a typical cumulus cloud (the white, fluffy ones you see on a nice day) as 1/2 gram per cubic meter—about a small marble’s worth of water in a space you and a friend could comfortably sit in. The density will be greater for different types of clouds. Next, figure out how big the cloud is. By measuring a cloud’s shadow when the sun is directly above it, you can get an idea of its width. Scientists does this by watching her odometer as they drives under a cloud. A typical cumulus, she says, is about a kilometer across, and usually roughly cubical—so a kilometer long and a kilometer tall, too. This gives you a cloud that’s one billion cubic meters in volume. Do the math with the densi...
